Background: Robert Baker, who served as secretary to the United States Senate Majority, went to jail in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, yesterday, 14th January, to serve a sentence for tax evasion, theft and conspiracy. Baker was sentenced in 1967 but has been appealing since then against his conviction. When it was announced that he had lost his appeal, he was allowed to go voluntarily to the Marshal's office in Lewisburg. Prisoners are usually escorted to prison.

Robert Baker, a protege of former President Lyndon Johnson, is reputed to have earned more than a million dollars in property deals while serving as secretary tot he Senate Majority. He was accused of understating his income, transporting stolen money across state lines and using political campaign funds for his own purposes. The theft charge arises from a sum of nearly 100,000 dollars (42,000 pounds) not accounted for after a group of savings and loan officials made it available for Congress campaigns in 1962. The prosecution alleged that Baker kept the money.
