Background: Malagasy marked the 12th anniversary of independence with a large-scale parade in the capital, Tananarive, on Wednesday (October 14).
President Philibert Tsiranana, though he has been in poor health for some time, led members of his government in taking the salute at the march-past.
For two-and-a-half hours, units of the armed forces paraded along the Avenue of Independence. They were later followed by a flypast of aircraft and a marchpast by large contingents of schoolchildren and students.
The President climaxed the ceremonies by laying a wreath at the city's monument to the Republic.
Because of his ill-health, President Tsiranana named three new Vice-Presidents on the eve of the independence anniversary. The three, all holding ministerial positions. will join the existing Vice-President Calvin Tsiebo in helping the head of state to supervise and co-ordinate ministerial activities.
