Background: Three people died and forty-seven others were injured when leaking gas caused several explosions in a Philadelphia suburb on Wednesday night (27 January). Temperatures well below freezing and winds gusting at up to nearly 40 miles per hour (64 KPH) caused balls of flame to leap from one side of the street to the other.

Twenty-four homes were destroyed and several others badly damaged. A series of explosions was heard just before the fire. In the bitter cold, water from the pumps froze in mid-air and turned nearby streets into solid sheets of glass. Smoke and flames could be seen ten miles (16 kilometres) away.

It took firemen from 25 surrounding vicinities, three hours to bring the fires under control. One of the dead was a 19-year-old volunteer fireman; the other two were two young children.
