Background: South African Cabinet Ministers were waiting to greet premier Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd as he flew into Bloemfontein, may 29, to participate in celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Union. It was his first public function since the attempt on his life, April 9, and he looked fir and well as he moved through crowds of well-wishers to his car.
The South African Prime Minster went in to the Debrug military training area where he was to inspect a guard of honour. A big display was held all day as part of the festivities. Dr. Verwoerd is due to make the main speech at the climax of the celebrations, May 31.
It is reported that Dr. Verwoerd will return to hospital for a few days in the second week of June for a plastic surgery operation on his right ear. The last medical bulletin issued said his recovery was virtually complete.
