Background: Defense Department handout on tests being conducted at U.S.Army Quartermaster Research and Engineering Command.

    Defense Department Release follows:
The Nation's largest solar furnace, capable of intensifying ordinary sunshine into temperatures approaching those generated by a nuclear blast is operated by the U.S.Army Quartermaster Research and Engineering Command, Natick, Massachusetts.

Designed for laboratory testing of Quartermaster materials for protection of the soldier against thermal effects of nuclear and other weapons, the solar furnace is capable of producing temperatures in excess of 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

All controls and the laboratory testing of equipment are housed in the test chamber, which with its 8' square face and 16' length matches the operation centered in the concentrator and attenuator.About two feet inside its window is the relatively tiny (four inches) focal point of the build up solar radiation. There, materials under test are subjected to short, shutter control and exposures of high thermal flux.

The Sandpiper's is an experimental light-weight, rough terrain forklift truck designed and developed to meet an Army requirement for a rapid, efficient and a inexpensive means of clearing drop zones during airborne operations.

The Sandpiper has a load capacity of 4,000 pounds and can travel at a maximum speed of 25 miles an hour.It is 81 inches high, 156 inches long, 95 inches wide and its service weight is approximately 5,000 pounds.

It is able to negotiate slopes of up to 30 per cent and maintain side slope stability of up to 30 per cent.It is air transportable both by fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter.

Outwardly identical, these experimental uniforms are undergoing tests conducted to determine their effectiveness against burning. The uniform on the right has been treated with an experimental flame resistant preparation; the other is untreated. The results of testing are graphically shown.Experiments of this nature are a continuing project at natick to insure safety and well-being of the American soldier as an effective fighting man.
