Background: Two Kenyan women -- Mary Orie-Rogo Ondieki and Sylvia Omino, have decided that action speaks louder than words in their pursuit of women's rights. They've teamed up to enter in the East African Safari Rally -- a traditional male preserve -- regarded by motor sportsmen as one of the toughest rallies in the world.

The two are not the first women to enter, but they make up the first all-African Women's team. Last week they were out practicing on the route they will take through Masailand. The race starts on the 11 April.

Teams of European women drivers have entered the race before and one well-known team, Ann Taieth and Sylvia King, has promised to give Mary and Sylvia all the help they can.

The two African women are keen advocates of women's rights. Both have continued their careers although they are both married, each with three children. They say the Safari Rally represents an opportunity for them to show their dissatisfaction that this kind of sporting event is normally reserved for men -- or for European women
