Background: Nicaragua's Foreign Minister, Dr Lorenzo Guerrero, was due to leave Taipei on Tuesday (4 April) at the and of a five-day visit to Taiwan.
Dr Guerrero was accompanied by a twenty-man party and during their stay the Nicaraguans had extensive talks with their counterparts in Taiwan on ways in which Nicaragua and Taiwan could co-operate.
The visit was made at the invitation of the Government in Taipei.
Soon after his arrival, Dr Guerrero presented one of Nicaragua's higher honours - the Order National Ruben Dario - to Taiwan's Vice President, Mr C.K. Yen and to the Deputy Premier, Mr Chiang Ching-kuo.
(The name Ruben Dario, which the honour carries, commemorates a Nicaraguan-born writer who some experts consider the greatest of all Spanish poets. He's best known for the way in which he experimented with many forms of verse and for the three great collections of poetry in which he expressed his literary theories. Ruban Dario died in 1916, aged 49).

Soon after his arrival Dr Guerrero presented one of Nicaraguans highest honours, first to the Vice-President of Taiwan, Mr Yen - then to the deputy Prime Minister, Chiang Ching-kuo. The honour being presented was the "Order National Ruben Dario". This visit of the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister was made at the invitation of the Government of Taiwan. It provided an opportunity for the two countries to discuss future cooperation and trade.
