Background: Football's world champions, Argentina, have been beaten by England in the first match of their short European tour. England won a spectacular game by three goals to one before a capacity crowd of 92,000 in London's Wembley Stadium.

SYNOPSIS: England, in the white strip and playing from left to right, started the match looking for an encouraging result before the finals of the European Nations Championship in Italy in June. But the crowd, basking in the evening sunshine, had to wait until the end of an eventful first half for the first goal. It came when England's Steve Coppell beat Terantini and crossed brilliantly for David Johnson to head home.

If the scoreboard incorrectly named the scorer there was no mistaking argentina's diego Maradona (wearing number 10). Spanish club Barcelona are prepared to pay three million pounds (sterling) for the brilliant 19 year old and he constantly worried the English defence.

At half-time the score was 1-0 to England but they were soon threatened again by a team containing six of the 1978 World Cup winning side.

But it was England who proved better at finishing off their attacks with Kevin Keegan and Ray Kennedy setting David Johnson up for his second goal.

Argentina soon countered through Maradona whose astonishing ball control won a penalty after a mistimed tackle from Kenny Sansom. World Cup captain Daniel Passarella scored the goal.

European Footballer of the Year Keegan capped a good night for England with a fine right foot shot making the final score 3 - 1.
