Background: The new government of Bolivia has been under pressure to introduce reforms following a series of military governments which have ruled the country since 1969. Among those calling for change are the nation's students.

SYNOPSIS: The transition to a civilian government under Walter Guevara Arze who became President in August has not been smooth. And students are among those with a series of reforms that they want enacted. To back their appeals, they occupied the main street of La Paz. Thousands called for the return of the student card discount system, a reduction in the voting age from 21 to eighteen years, and a reduction in the time required for compulsory military service from one year to three months.

Riot police were called when the demonstration became a street battle. Several students were arrested.

Outside the tourist information centre students threw stones and bottles, breaking a window and at one stage they caused the police to retreat and take cover in Air Force premises. Another issue introduced by the students during the demonstration was a call for the release of students arrested in earlier demonstrations.

Police reinforcements eventually forced the students to disperse, and the streets were patrolled for the rest of the night.
