Background: Howling winds and torrential rains swept North Formosa, Aug 9, as typhoon "Trix" swept on its way towards the Chinese mainland. Taipei - the capital - was isolated from surrounding lowlands by floods running three to six feet deep along main roads. Water was three foot high in the city centre, and in the suburbs boats were used to evacuate people from half-submerged houses. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
