WE WILL BE GOING THROUGH A LOT OF THE DAT COURSE FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS DOWN HERE, AND I'LL BE SEEING MORE OF YOU FROM TIME TO TIME AND WE CAN GET IN MORE OF A DESCRIPTION OF SOME OF THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE FLIGHT. BUT IT WAS AS NEAR PERFECT A LAUNCH AS I COULD ENVISION. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF PRESS COVERAGE ABOUT WHAT I SAY AND WHAT WE DID, AND SOME OF THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED. IT'S JUST ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE THE WAY THINGS LOOK FROM UP THERE. THE BOOST OF PERFORMANCE, AS YOU ARE ALL WELL AWARE, WAS VERY NEAR PERFECT. WE WERE JUST VERY FEW FEET PER SECOND OFF THE VELOCITY THAT WE WANTED, AND I CAN'T DO ANYTHING BUT GIVE YOU ALL MY MOST HEARTFELT THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE OF YOU FOR A JOB EXCELLENTLY WELL DONE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH."

Background: UNITED STATES ASTRONAUT COLONEL JOHN GLENN RECEIVED A TUMULTUOUS WELCOME AS HE RETURNED TO CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA, FEBRUARY 23. IT WAS GLENN'S FIRST APPEARANCE THERE SINCE HE TOOK OFF FROM THE LAUNCH PAD THREE DAYS BEFORE TO MAKE THREE ORBITS OF THE EARTH AND RETURN 1000 MILES OUT IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.

EARLIER GLENN HAD FLOWN IN FROM GRAND TURK ISLAND IN THE BAHAMAS, ACCOMPANIED BY VICE-PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON, TO BE GREETED AT EDWARDSAAIR FORCE BASE BY HIS WIFE AND FAMILY. IN AN OPEN CAR, COLONEL AND MRS. GLENN AND THE VICE PRESIDENT MADE THEIR WAY TO CAPE CANAVERAL. ALONG THE ROUTE, THE MOTORCADE WAS REPEATEDLY BROUGHT TO A HALT BY CHEERING CROWDS.

A SHORT TIME LATER PRESIDENT KENNEDY ARRIVED AT THE CAPE AIR FIELD WHERE HE WAS GREETED BY GLENN AND THE TWO PROCEEDED TO THE MERCURY CONTROL CENTRE WHICH DIRECTED THE HISTORIC FLIGHT. THE PRESIDENT MET SCIENTISTS AND TECHNICIANS WHO WORKED ON THE PROJECT, INCLUDING FLIGHT DIRECTOR CHRIS KRAFT, WHO POINTED OUT DETAILS.

AT LAUNCH PAD 14, THE BLAST OFF POINT, PRESIDENT KENNEDY PRAISED COLONEL GLENN AND OTHERS CONNECTED WITH PROJECT MERCURY. GLENN, IN RETURN, PRESENTED KENNEDY WITH A HELMET, THEREBY MAKING HIM AN HONORARY MEMBER OF THE PROJECT.

AT A SECOND CEREMONY, HELD OUTSIDE HANGAR S. - GLENN'S HEADQUARTERS DURING HIS TRAINING PROGRAMME - PRESIDENT KENNEDY AWARDED GLENN THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION'S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL.
