Background: As a practical gesture of co-operation with Cambodia the South Vietnamese Army has rebuilt eight bridges, destroyed in recent weeks by Viet Cong and North Vietnamese invaders.

One of these bridges, spanning a tributary of the Mekong on the way from Saigon to Phnom Penh, was ceremonially handed over three days ago (23 June) to Cambodia's Minister of Public Works by South Vietnam's General Tri.

General Tri commands the Parrots Beak and Fishook areas of Cambodia. He has made a name for himself in this hotly contested region. On this as on every other occasion he spoke of the need for the continued presence of South Vietnamese troops in Cambodia. U.S. forces will be withdrawing form Cambodia by the end of this month.

The gift to eight re-built bridges in designed as a goodwill gesture by the South Vietnamese towards Cambodia. The one near Svay Rineng, where this film was taken, forms part of the famous highway One which links the two capitals. It is still highly dangerous at night and road blocks appear on it as it approached Phnom Penh.

Cambodian girl member sof the local civil defence force attended the ceremony.

The Cambodians -- still officially neutral -- will now be responsible for guarding the rebuilt bridge but they know they can count on the South Vietnamese army for help in emergencies.
