TRANSCRIPT SEQ 12: REPORTER: "Richard, you're no stranger to Victory Circle here at Daytona International Speedway. This makes it number three in the 500, doesn't it?"



PETTY: "Yes, this is probably the biggest win ever, I mean, the last one's always the biggest."



REPORTER: "How about the car, Richard" How did it handle out there? It looked good from our vantage point."



PETTY: "Well, I think probably my best advantage--the advantage I had--was the car did handle real good. I think it handled a little bit better than most of them, and this was able to add to-- the track got slick and everything. I was able to go wide open around the race track and some of them couldn't."

Background: Driver Richard Petty, who has won more money in stock-car racing than anyone else in the United States, became the first man to win the Daytona 500 for the third time on Sunday (14 February). There were 40 cars competing in the annual Florida race for late-model stock cars. Petty's 1971 Plymouth was one of two factory-backed cars in the race. The other half of the Petty factory team, a 1971 Dodge driven by Buddy Baker, finished second.

After his victory, Petty was interviewed by a reporter of America's National Broadcasting Company.

SYNOPSIS: Daytona Beach in Florida was the scene of the 500-mile stock-car race on Sunday. There were 40 cars participating in the 200-lap race.

One of the first casualties was car number 25.

The race was one of the most competitive ever as the drivers tried to be first over the finish for the prize of 48,000 U.S. dollars.

Car No. 25 made it back in the race after its short pit stop. There were 48 lead changes during the race Among 11 drivers.

Trying for victory was Richard Petty, who has won more money in stock-car racing in the United States than anyone else. He and his team-mate, Buddy Baker, were driving the only factory-backed cars in the 500.

At the height of the race, driver Dick Brooks nearly ended his part in the 500 with a skidding spin. But he recovered in time and continued the competition.

The lead changes were recorded by the scoreboard as the drivers sped round the track.

Petty crossed the line first and became the first three-time winner. He was interviewed by a reporter after his win.

Petty became the first three-time winner of the race with an average speed of about 145 miles per hour. Team-mate Baker took second position.
