TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: "The protesters' helicopters were first grounded by weather. Now, they may be grounded by the Federal government. Officials from the Department of Fisheries have been closely monitoring the activities of both Brian Davies and the Greenpeace Foundation. Possible charges would involve flying within 20,000 feet of a herd, and landing a helicopter within half a mile of a seal. The officials also have other exhibits against the Greenpeace Foundation, which could be used for other possible charges. The exhibits include the handcuffs used by one member to attach himself to a ship, and an anchor-like device which the Foundation was apparently planning to use to restrict the movements of the sealing ships themselves. Davies and Greenpeace have been anticipating, almost inviting, the laying of these charges. It's understood they've already prepared bonds which would free the helicopters from impoundment. Finlay MacDonald, CTV News, ST. Anthony."

Background: INTRODUCTION: Angry protests against the annual baby seal hunt in Canada are continuing. In Paris, French police were called out to protect the Canadian Embassy as crowds carrying placards and banners gathered to condemn the hunt, which began last week. In Canada itself, protesters have gathered at the hunting grounds in Newfoundland to try and disrupt the killings - but they've been having little success.

SYNOPSIS: The Paris demonstrators were adding their own angry protests to those of conservationists and wild-life lovers from all over the world. This year, the Canadian government is allowing 170,000 baby seals to be clubbed to death for their pelts. The hunters themselves are mostly Canadians and Norwegians. The killing season lasts for two or three weeks, until the hunters have fulfilled their quotas. Within the first week, some 50,000 seal pups were killed -- most of them two to three weeks old.

Meanwhile, protesters at the killing grounds were being closely watched by Canadian authorities. A reporter there takes up the story.
