Background: A new organisation has been established to look after the cultural history of the Palestinian people. Called the International Association for the Safeguard of the Palestinian Cultural Heritage, the organisation had its foundation meeting in Paris on Thursday (18 March). Its aims are to identify, survey and protect this heritage in all parts of the world. It will delve into such areas as archeology, ancient manuscripts, literature and poetry, music, folklore, costumes and the visual arts. And it also plans to look into the ways that social and scientific changes are affecting all parts of this heritage. The chairman, Irish barrister and politician Sean MacBride, is a Nobel and Lenin Peace Prize winner, who was chairmen of Amnesty International from 1970-73. The association is looking forward to holding its first general assembly in Tunis in September.
