Background: During West German Chancellor Adenauer's U.S. tour, Texas welcomed him, April 16 with cheers, songs, a barbecue and a ten-gallon hat. The Chancellor, usually austere, responded first with surprise, the with smiles and jokes.
The 85-year-old Chancellor came to the hill country of Texas as the two-day guest of Vice-President Johnson, who owns a large ranch there.
Members of the Adenauer party were surprised to find many of the guests speaking to them in German - with a strong Texas accent. This part of Texas was settled more than 100 years ago by German immigrants.
In the Vice President's orchard, the barbecue was served to the 1,000 guests. Women wearing pioneer costumes - long dresses, bonnets and aprons - served potato salad, barbecued beef, cole slaw and other picnic fare.
