Background: Haruo Yasuda of Japan yesterday (Sunday) survived an attack of nerves to win the top money of $23,000 (American) in the Singapore Open Golf Championship.

Yasuda also fought off a last-round burst by veteran Australian golfer, Peter Thomson. With a 72-hole aggregate of 277, Yasuda finished two strokes ahead of Thomson and his world cup partner Takaaki Kono.

Next in line were Hsu Chi San and Hsu Cheng San of Taiwan. They both shot two below par in the final round on Sunday to finish with 280.

Yasuda had three early birdies to reach the turn for a three-under-par 32 but after some shaky putts on the home nine holes wound up one over par. Kono and Thomson also had trouble with their putts on the last nine holes of the Bukit course in Singapore.

Two more Japanese golfers - Tomoo Ishii and Masashi Ozaki - shared fourth place with final tallies of 282. Hard on their heels with 283 were Hideyo Sugimoto and Kenji Hosoishi.

Fist in of the 22 amateurs competing was Jimmy Stewart, a 15-year-old American schoolboy. He recorded consistent rounds of 71,71,70,71 to end up only six strokes behind Yasuda - and 18 strokes ahead of his nearest amateur competitor.
