Background: The Syrian Prime Minister, Mr. Abdul Rahman Khleifawi arrived in Amman on Thursday (30 June) for talks with Jordanian leaders. Syria is one of the "confrontation" states in the conflict with Israel together with Jordan and Egypt and is not only beset by economic difficulties. Ideological disputes with Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia - mainly over Syria's intervention in the Lebanese Civil War - have added to the Government's problems. Syria's intervention has been given by some observers as a reason for a sharp drop in Arab investment in the country.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Khleifawi was met at Amman's airport by his Jordanian counterpart, Mr. Modar Badran. Mr. Khleifawi's visit follows a visit to Syria by King Hussein of Jordan one week earlier (23 June). Syria is Jordan's closest Arab ally.
King Hussein's visit coincided with a series of emergency meetings held in Damascus by the ruling Syrian Ba'ath Party. According to one report, the Syrian Prime Minister had threatened to resign in the face of the country's severe economic difficulties.
King Hussein's talks with President Assad of Syria were believed to have touched on the state of Syria's stability especially following the assassination on 18 June of Syria's Army Missile Corps Commander, Brigadier Abdul Hamid Razouk.
