Background: After talks with President Pompidou in Paris yesterday (September 9), President Leopold Senghor of Senegal said that France would explain to African States that the arms it is selling to South Africa are not the kind of weapons used to fight nationalists.

The Senegalese leader said that France, as a freedom-loving and anti-racist nation, should make its standpoint clear on the arms issue.

He confirmed that Senegal had been informed that two of its citizens took part in the hi-jacking and destruction of a Pan American jumbo jet at Cairo Airport last Sunday. He humorously blamed it on French influence in Senegal, saying: "In France, any theory or ideology finds supporters."
President Pompidou will visit Senegal during his proposed African tour early next year.

President Senghor is to visit Morocco on Friday (September 11) on his way home and will have talks with King Hassan.
