TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: "I'M HAVING TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING HOW NEGROES WOULD PREFER TO VOTE FOR YOU, A SEGREGATIONIST, RATHER THAN ANDERSON, ONE OF THEIR OWN."

SEQ. 5: SMITHERMAN: "I THINK THAT IF THEY DO VOTE FOR ME - I THINK THE NEGRO COMMUNITY, AND I HAVE WORKED WITH THE NEGRO COMMUNITY, I MAKE NO BONES OF THAT -- THEY'RE ALL CITIZENS OF SELMA, I SAY THIS, I THINK THEY APPRECIATE HONESTY AND SINCERITY MORE THAN ANYTHING. I DON'T THINK THEY BELIEVE WILD PROMISES OF POLITICIANS TRYING TO SEEK THEIR VOTES FOR-- JUST MAKING WILD PROMISES. I THINK THEY'LL GO BACK, IF I GET THEIR VOTES, OF A NUMBER OF THEIR VOTES, AND SEE IF I'VE KEPT MY WORD IN THE PAST AND WHAT I WOULD DO FOR THE OVERALL GOOD OF THE TOTAL COMMUNITY."

SEQ. 6: ANDERSON: "I'M RUNNING NOT ONLY AS A NEGRO CANDIDATE. I'M RUNNING AS A CANDIDATE WHO IS PREPARED TO MEET THE NEEDS AND PROBLEMS OF THE PEOPLE OF THIS COMMUNITY WITHOUT REGARD AS TO RACE. I FEEL AND I THINK THAT THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW ME AND HAVE HAD DEALINGS WITH ME KNOW THAT I'M SINCERE. AND I THINK THAT WITHIN ITSELF WILL BRING ABOUT A GREAT NUMBER OF WHITE VOTES."

RECENT POPULATION FIGURES SHOWED 8,214 WHITES AND 5,207 NEGROES REGISTERED IN SELMA. TODAY'S REPORTS INDICATED THAT A NUMBER OF NEGROES VOTED FOR SMITHERMAN AND THAT THREE OF THE NEGRO CANDIDATES HAD AMASSED SUFFICIENT TO QUALIFY FOR THE RUN-OFF RACE.

MAYOR SMITHERMAN AND THE REV. ANDERSON WERE INTERVIEWED YESTERDAY...
