Background: Reports circulated Monday that the marriage of Britain's Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon was breaking up. Lord Snowdon, who was at first reported in seclusion in New York, was discovered leaving a restaurant there Monday night (Feb 27) and denied the reports.
Lord Snowdon had been on an extended photographic assignment in Japan. He left there Sunday and is stopping over in New York before returning home. He was said to have grown a beard and to have been travelling as plain "Mr. Jones."
When discovered leaving New York's Forum restaurant, Lord Snowdon was beardless. He said the reports of an impending divorce were totally untrue. He denied having grown beard, and attributed the whole thing to the "gutter press of Europe." He would not permit a filmed interview.
In London, Princess Margaret's press secretary made it clear that she would have no comment. "Why should there be?" he asked.
