Background: Italian head of state President Giovanni Gronchi paid his respects to Pope John XXIII in the Vatican May 6.
During the twenty-minute audience in the Sala del Tronetto - followed by a ten-minute papal reception for Italy's Foreign Minister Signor Pella - the Pope and his visitor exchanged gifts. Signor Gronchi handed over six exquisite candlesticks and was presented by the Pontiff with a 14th-century painting.
Afterwards the President prayed at the tomb of St. Peter before returning to the Quirinal.
