Background: More archaeological treasures in northern Greece were brought to light this month (May) in Pella the ancient capital of macedonia near Salonika. The find comes two years after the discovery of the famous Macedonian graves of King Philip and Alexander the Great in Vergina.

SYNOPSIS: The site lies close by Pella, the fifth century capital of the Macedonian King Archelaus and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. Excavations of Pella began in 1957 and revealed the town grid and house colonnades.

The new excavations near by have unearthed well-preserved walls and various carved graves which experts believe will add much valuable new information for historians. The discoveries of the past few years have turned up a wealth of artifacts, wall paintings and friezes dating back to the fourth century BC. Magnificent rare treasures from the royal tombs in Vergina, discovered in 1978 included gold and silver diadems encrusted with previous stones, gold caskets, spears and wreaths. These unique and magnificent treasures are now in the Salonika museum.

The artifacts uncovered at the new Pella site, are of a more simple beauty, and obviously not from the tombs of Kings. But the amphoras, vases and bracelets uncovered are exceptionally well-preserved and intact, and should throw new light on the area's ancient history.

Systematic excavations will begin soon in the area. Expert archaeologists hope the site will provide a great deal more information as the work continues.
