Background: French farmers from the North-Western region of Brittany, angered by what they see as unfairly subsidised meat imports, took their grievances to the capital. One-thousand Breton pig-farmers in coaches drove to Paris on April 26 to demonstrate against the European Economic Community (EEC) system of Monetary Compensatory Amounts (MCAS). Included in the convoy was a West German meat truck "taken over" by the protesters for the occasion. It was later accompanied back to the West German border by police. The MCAS effectively subsidises most pork imports into France while taxing French exports. The protesters, some carrying Breton nationalist flags, then marched towards the Agriculture Ministry. The Agriculture Minister, M. Michel Rocard, who has been negotiating for France at rough EEC farm talks in Brussels, acknowledged the severe economic difficulties of French farmers. On the same day, about two-thousand pharmacy students in Paris staged a sit-in outside the City Hall in protest at government health service and education plans. Their action was backed by a similar protest by University students from Jussieu College outside the National Assembly buildings. Medical and other students have now joined forces with hospital doctors and consultants, whose continuing strike action is currently hitting the health service.
