Background: Major-General Yakubu Gowon, the head of state of Federal Nigeria, made a two-day stop-over in Sudan on Monday (31 August) on his way to the meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (O.A.U.) in Addis Ababa. Major-General Jaafar Nimeiry, the Sudanese leader, left with the Nigerian leader for the talks in Ethiopia.
The two heads of state held talks during General Gowon's visit. In a communique issued afterwards Nigeria and Sudan reaffirmed their commitment to the principles and purposes of the O.A.U. It added that the two countries also agreed to work closely together for the defence and respect of independence and territorial integrity of all African States.
General Gowon and Major-General Nimeiry criticised the policy of apartheid in South Africa and also expressed their moral and material support for all liberation movements engaged in the struggle against colonialism and imperialism.
Major-General Nimeiry has accepted an invitation to visit Nigeria to take part in the tenth anniversary of independence celebrations in October.
