    Background: CASTLE DONINGTON, DERBY, U.K.

Randy Mamola (Number 2), of the United States, rode his Suzuki to victory in the John Player 500cc World Cup race at Donington Park in Derby, England on October 4. The event is considered the British equivalent to a Grand Prix in motorcycling, although it does not have formal championship status. Mamola, recent victor in the West German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, withstood the challenge of Italian Marco Lucchinelli (No. 1) who came in second on his Honda. South African Kork Ballington, on a Kawasaki, finished third and Englishman Ron Haslam (No. 28) was fourth on a Honda. Some of the attention was taken away from Mamola's victory by the presence of injured English ace Barry Sheene. The former world champion shattered both legs in a crash just two months ago and was not expected to ride again. But he arrived at Donington Park and soon completed a couple of laps on a production machine with the help of a mechanic to stabilise the bike. Sheene hopes to return to competitive racing next year.
