Background: Chile's President, Salvador Allende and top ranking government, Army, Navy and Air Force officials attended the funeral on Saturday (28 July) of the President's former Aide de Camp, Captain Arturo Araya, at Valaparaiso.

The captain was killed on Wednesday (27 July) by a hail of bullets at his home in Santiago. The Armed Forces have demanded punishment for the killers, and President Allende has appointed a special commission to investigate the killing.

Before the civic funeral on Saturday, Captain Araya's coffin lay open in Santiago as thousands of people filed past it. The service was held at the Naval Academy at Valparaiso, for several years the home of Captain Araya.

Late on Saturday, President Allende's Government indirectly blamed the so-called 'Fatherland and Liberty' organisation, a clandestine neo-fascist group, for the killing.
