    NARRATION

IMAGINATIVE ENGINEERING HAS BUILT THIS GIANT NEW STEEL PLANT ON THE OCEAN SURROUNDING TABATA (TOH-BAH-TAH) CITY, JAPAN.

WITH LITTLE LAND SPACE AVAILABLE, ENGINEERS FOR YAWATA (YAH-WAH-TAH) WORKS HAD TO RECLAIM MILLIONS OF CUBIC FEET OF LAND FROM THE SEA BOTTOM. ON TOP OF THIS FILLED LAND, THE 2,000 ACRE PLANT IS BUILT.

PILE DRIVERS SLAM STEEL CELLS INTO THE ROCKBED OF THE SEA TO FORM THE BASE OF A 2,300 FOOT LOADING DOCK

A CONCRETE FOUNDATION BECOMES THE BASE OF A 250 FOOT HIGH BLAST FURNACE.

THE FLOOR OF THE MAIN ROLLING WILL STRETCHES A QUARTER OF A MILE. JAPAN IS THE WORLD'S FOURTH LARGEST PRODUCER OF IRON AND STEEL. TODAY, YAWATA'S NUMBER ONE FURNACE PRODUCES 1,500 TONS OF STEEL A DAY. THE PLANT'S DOCKS HANDLE MILLIONS OF TONS OF ORE AND COAL, MUCH IMPORTED FROM THE UNITED STATES. AIMING FOR 3 MILLION TONS OF STEEL ANNUALLY, PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY AND EXPANSION ARE OF PRIME IMPORTANCE IN THIS REMARKABLE STEEL PLANT BUILT ON THE SEA.
