Background: The United States Senator Henry Jackson formally declared himself a candidate for the 1976 Democratic Presidential nomination in Washington on Thursday (6 February).

The Washington State Democrat's long-expected announcement came in a paid television broadcast and followed months of speaking and fund-raising tours around the country that have made him the leading active candidate for nomination. He emphasised his experience in foreign policy and economics.

Senator Jackson tried for the nomination in 1972, but pulled out after a dismal showing in early primary elections. At the party's nominating convention, however, he came second to Senator George McGovern of South Dakota, who is not actively seeking the nomination this year.

Senator Jackson is the fourth Democrat to formally announce his candidacy for the 1976 race, which was thrown wide open last year when the acknowledged Democratic favourite, Senator Edward Kennedy, said he was not interested in the nomination for personal reasons.

Two liberals, Congressman Morris Udall of Arizona and former Senator Fred Harris of Oklahoma, and a moderate, Georgia's former Governor Jimmy Carter, are the three other declared candidates.

Other Democrats are expected to enter the race, including Senator Lloyd Bentsen of Texas.
