Background: Tennis....and there were some major surprises on the opening day (25 June) of the 93rd. Wimbledon championships with top Americans Arthur Ashe and Vitas Gerulaitis going out to Chris Kachel from Australia and Pat Dupre from the United States. But defending champion Bjorn Borg made no mistake against another American Tom Gorman, running out the winner 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-1. The controversial American John McEnroe had little trouble disposing of fellow countryman Terry Moor, losing only ten games as he swept to a 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 straight sets victory.
SYNOPSIS: The fair-haired Borg in bidding for his fourth consecutive singles victory at Wimbledon, and traditionally his was the first match in the centre court.
Gorman is in the twilight of his career but had some good results in the early seventies and surprised the Swede with his powerful serve when he took the first set. But Borg fought back to level the match at one set apiece.
The American also served for the third set at 5-4, but Borg resisted the challenge, took the set and soon took a 5-1 lead in the fourth.
The Swede is a notoriously slow starter at Wimbledon, but Gorman had missed his chance, and the champion moved smoothly through to the next round.
Injury forced John McEnroe, at the far end, to miss the French championships, but he was determined to be at Wimbledon where he first burst on the world tennis scene after having to qualify in 1977. And he soon had Terry Moor in trouble with set point against the service of the tall American.
McEnroe doesn't waste many chances and he broke serve to take the first set 7-5.
Rain interrupted the first afternoon's play, but not McEnroe's concentration. He took the second set 6-1, and with a service break in hand served for the match at 5-4. Three match points to the young American star, and he didn't waste one, serving out for an impressive straight sets victory.
