Background: WATCHMAKERS, JEWELLERS AND BUYERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE IN LONDON THIS WEEK FOR THE 10TH INTERNATIONAL WATCH AND JEWELLERY TRADE FAIR, WHICH OPENED TODAY (MONDAY) WITH GOODS WORTH A TOTAL OF ABOUT GBP4,500,000 ON DISPLAY. THE EXHIBITS RANGE FROM THE MOST TRADITIONAL TYPE OF JEWELLERY TO WATCHES ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR THE SPACE AGE.

DURING THE PAST WEEK, PRECIOUS JEWELS, WATCHES AND CLOCKS, CUTLERY AND GLASSWARE, HAVE BEEN ARRIVING BY LAND, SEA AND AIR IN LONDON FOR THE TRADE FAIR, WHICH IS SPONSORED BY BRITAIN'S NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF GOLDSMITHS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE TRADE MAGAZINE "WATCHMAKER, JEWELLER AND SILVERSMITH."
THE FAIR CONTINUES UNTIL FRIDAY. TRENDS IN WRISTWATCH DESIGN SEEN AT THE SHOW INCLUDE MORE ATTENTION BEING PAID TO THE FLUSH FITTING OF STRAPS OR BRACELETS AGAINST THE WATCH TO ENSURE A COMPUTABLE FIT ON THE WRIST. ELECTRONIC WATCHES ARE IN GREATER PROFUSION THAN EVER BEFORE -- AND THERE'S ALSO A RANGE OF TRANSISTORISED BATTERY CLOCKS.

WATCHES WITH ALARMS, HIGHLY PRACTICAL IN INTENT, AND WATCHES THAT ARE ALMOST PURE LUXURY -- WORTH HUNDREDS OF TIMES MORE FOR THEIR JEWEL ENTRUSTMENTS THAN FOR THEIR MECHANISM -- CAN BE SEEN SIDE BY SIDE. ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL AND ADVANCED TIME-PIECES IS A BULOVA ACCUTRON CLOCK ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR THE CONTROL PANEL OF AMERICA'S PROJECT MERCURY.

WITH THE MERCURY PROJECT, THE AMERICANS HOPE TO PUT THE FIRST MAN ON THE MOON. THE CLOCKS HAVE A 60-HOUR DIAL AND A SPECIAL STOP-WATCH MECHANISM TO ENABLE ASTRONAUTS TO OPERATE THE CLOCKS LIKE STOP-WATCHES, ENABLING THEM TO KEEP PRECISELY TO SCHEDULE IN ANY MANOEUVRE.
