Background: Sudanese Head of State Major General Jaafar Mohamed El-Nimeiry was warmly greeted by hundreds of East Berliners when he arrived for an official visit as part of his East European tour.
A 21-gun salute was fired as East German leader Walter Ulbricht, backed by a guard of honour form the National Peoples Army, came out to greet the Sudanese leader.
Major General Nimeiry is the first African head of state ever to pay an official visit to the East German state.
In a brief speech at the East Berlin airport, General Nimeiry said that his government, which ousted that of former Prime Minister Mahgoub in May last year in a military take-over, was determined to strengthen relations with East Germany.
Prior to his arrival in East Berlin Major General Nimeiry visited Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland.
