    Background: THE FIRST 18 KM (11 MILES) SECTION OF THE NEW AEROTRAIN LINE BETWEEN PARIS AND ORLEANS IS NOW BEING BUILT. MEANWHILE AN EXPERIMENTAL AEROTRAIN IS MAKING SPEED TESTS AT GOMETZ LA VILLE.

    THE ORLEANS-PARIS LINE IS MADE OF 20 METRES LONG PREFABRICATED LENGTHS OF FERRO-CONCRETE EACH WEIGHING 45 TONS. THE TRACK RESTS ON PILLARS 20 METERS APART, FIRMLY EMBEDDED IN THE GROUND. THE LINE IS FIVE SECTION (16 FT) ABOVE THE GROUND. AT CHEVILLEY, IN THE MIDDLE THE SECTION UNDER CONSTRUCTION, TURNTABLES AND PLATFORMS FOR THE NEW MEMORIAL SERVICE ARE ALSO BEING BUILT. THE LINE IS PROGRESSING AT ABOUT 2 KMS (6 1/2 FT) A MONTH, AND THE FIRST AEROTRAINS WILL USE THE RAIL NEXT MAY.

    THE PURELY EXPERIMENTAL AEROTRAIN AT GOMETZ LA VILLE IS UNDERGOING A SERIES OF TESTS ON THE EFFECTS OF SPEEDS BETWEEN 300 AND 400 KMS AN HOUR (186-248 M.P.H.). IT'S A TWO SEATER , WITH THE PILOT AND ENGINEERING SITTING IN A SMALL COCK PIT REMINISCENT OF A SMALL AIRCRAFT. 8.30 (26 FT) LONG, IT IS 2.49 METRES (7 FT) BROAD. IT GLIDES ALONG ON 8 AIRCUSHIONS, AND HAS A SPEED OF 375 KMS. TO 400 KMS. AN HOUR, DEPENDING ON THE LENGTH OF TRACK AVAILABLE.

    MONORAIL TRANSPORT IS STEADILY INCREASING IN FRANCE AND THE GOMETZ LA VILLE TRACK ID ONE OF THE MAIN TEST CENTRES. THE LATEST AEROTRAINS ARE EXPECTED TO USE LINEAR INDUCTIONS MOTORS.
