Background: Most of Brazil's 22 states sent a long-legged and beautiful contestant to Rio for the Miss Brazil contest. Brazil is bathing-beauty conscious these days, since the year they got a second place in the Miss Universe contest. This time they were wildly enthusiastic at the selections in the city stadium. Flowers and streamers were thrown at the girls, as they walked the raised platform. There was a special welcome for Miss Brazil of 1957, Terezinha Morango. Then came Miss Amazon, Miss Bahia, Miss Federal District (which contains Rio itself), Miss Pernambuco (where the Babacu nuts come from) and Miss Santa Catarina (whose states governor, Jorge Lacerda, was killed in the Curitiba plane crash five days previously).
Eventual winner - chosen after culture and language tests - was Miss Federal District, Adalgisa Colombo.
Will she become Miss Universe, when the final contests take place at Long Beach, California, shortly? Brazil would bet an awful lot of coffee beans on her chances...
