Background: French Nazi hunter Beate Klarsfeld was arrested by Chilean police on January 31 as she demonstrated for the expulsion of a former SS Colonel, Walter Rauff. The protest was held outside the official residence of President Augusto Pinochet - who is coming under increasing international pressure to deport Rauff. Klarsfeld, and about 40 demonstrators, marched past the main gate of the Moneda Palace in central Santiago carrying banners and chanting that Rauff was a murderer and must pay for his crimes. She was later taken to a police station and released after a small fine for causing street disorders. Klarsfeld has been in Chile for several weeks campaigning against Rauff's presence in the country. On January 26 she led a protest outside Rauff's home in a wealthy residential suburb. Rauff is alleged to have masterminded the extermination of ninety-seven thousand Jews under Nazi programmes. He fled to Chile in 1950 after escaping from a prison camp. The Chilean Supreme Court turned down a West German request for Rauff's extradition in 1963, and the government rejected a similar request by Israel. Klarsfeld has vowed to remain in Chile and to continue campaigning for Rauff's expulsion or extradition. However, official sources have said that the Chilean authorities were considering cancelling Klarsfeld's tourist visa to force her to leave the country.
