Background: A herd of 45 cattle was flown from Canada to Ghana on Monday (24 June) as part of the Canadian Government's assistance to improve Ghana's dairy herds. The cattle were flown to Kotoka International Airport in Accra; the shipment included veterinary equipment.

Canada is providing Ghana with two grants totalling 1,107,00 dollars (about 460,000 pounds sterling) to improve its beef and dairy industries and to upgrade training for veterinary assistants. A first grant of 762,000 dollars (317,500 pounds sterling) from the Canadian International Development Agency is to go to the University of Science and Technology at Kumasi. The money will be used to carry out a programme to boost livestock production and experiments in nutrition and disease control.

A programme of pure breeding and cross-breeding of cattle will be initiated. Feeding trials using local foodstuffs will also be conducted. As a first step in developing a dairy industry, the University will maintain a small herd to which Canada has contributed the 25 yearling Holstein heifers, five yearling bulls, three Galloway yearling heifers and two Galloway yearling bulls.

Canada is also providing dairy-processing plant, artificial insemination equipment and advisers to train Ghanaians in dairy management, processing and extension work.

The cattle and equipment are to go by road to Kumasi where they will be quarantined.
