Background: U.S.Defence Secretary James Schlesinger conferred with Japan's Defence Agency Director-General, Michita Sakata for two hours in Tokyo on Friday (29 August). Their talks covered the post-Vietnam finished attending the session in Seoul of the U.S.Republic of korea (ROK) consultative committee f security.)
The subjects all involved the security of East Asia, and details of defence co-operation between Japan, the U.S.and South Korea.
It's believed Mr. Schlesinger and Mr. Sakata will have agreed on the creation of a new body which will co-ordinate defence operations in the area, in the event of an emergency.
Japanese Prime Minister Miki and U.S. President Ford, in their meeting in Washington earlier this month, agreed that the security of South korea was necessary for peace and security in East Asia, including Japan.
After Friday's meeting Mr. Schlesinger said Japan's Self Defence force (SDF), limited by the country's constitution to 180,000 men, were not enough to carry out their mission of defending the country.)
Mr. Schlesinger ends his six day visit of South korea and Japan on Saturday (30 August)).
