Background: THE FIRST JAPANESE TO RECEIVE A NEW HEART IS DOING WELL, FOLLOWING HIS TRANSPLANT OPERATION YESTERDAY (THURSDAY), DOCTORS AT SAPPORO MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL SAID TODAY (FRIDAY). NOBUO MIYAZAKI, 18, HAD HIS FAILING HEART REPLACED WITH THAT OF A 21-YEAR-OLD ACCIDENT VICTIM EARLY YESTERDAY AT THE HOSPITAL IN THE NORTHERN JAPANESE TOWN OF SAPPORO.

DOCTORS SAID TODAY THE NEW HEART APPEARED TO BE FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. THE PATIENT'S BODY TEMPERATURE AND OTHER HEALTH CONDITIONS LED THEM TO BELIEVE HE WAS IN A GOOD CONDITION, THEY SAID.

THE OPERATION, CONDUCTED BY PROFESSOR JURO WADA, CHEST AND HEART SPECIALIST, LASTED THREE-AND-A-HALF-HOURS.

NOBOU MYAZAKI, THE RECIPIENT, HAD BEEN GROWING WEAKER FOR ABOUT TEN YEARS. FIRST HE WAS STOPPED FROM PLAYING GAMES, THEN KEPT HOME FROM SCHOOL AND LATER COULD HARDLY MOVE. WITH TEARS STREAMING DOWN THEIR FACES, HIS PARENTS TOLD REPORTERS: "WE HAD GIVEN HIM UP FOR LOST. BUT NOW WE CAN FIND NO WORDS TO EXPRESS OUR JOY".

IT WAS THE WORLD'S 30TH RECORDED HUMAN HEARTH TRANSPLANT.
