Background: THIS FLOATING OIL RIG SET SAIL FROM GREECE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) BOUND FOR THE PERSIAN GULF. THE RIG HAS BEEN SPECIALLY BUILT FOR SAUDI ARABIA'S OIL COMPANIES BY THE HELLENIC SHIPYARDS OF SCARAMANGA BAY.

THE FLOATING RIG IS TO BE USED TO EXPLOIT SUBMARINE OIL DEPOSITS WITHIN SAUDI, ARABIA'S TERRITORIAL WATERS. NAMED THE "ARAMCO 136" THE OIL RIG IS A COMPACT ISLAND CONTAINING ALL THE NECESSARY EQUIPMENT FOR DRILLING AND ESTABLISHING OIL WELLS IN THE SEA, WITH FACILITIES FOR A 140-MAN CREW.

THE FLOATING RIG MEASURES 254 FEET BY 70 FEET (ABOUT 80 BY 20 METRES). IT WILL BE TOWED TO THE SAUDI ARABIA PORT OF RAS TAMURA.

SYNOPSIS:Saudi Arabia's Oil Companies will now start augmenting their oil production by exploiting submarine oil deposits as similar companies did in other Emirates of the Persian Gulf. To this effect, special floating islands will be used for the drilling and the establishment of submarine wells inside the territorial waters of Saudi Arabia of the Gulf. The Hellenic Shipyards of Scaramanga Bay have these days completed the first of such an "island", the "heavy lift pipe laying barge" -- as they call it -- and which will operate in the Persian Gulf. It has 254 x 70 12 feet dimensions, is equipped with a heavy lift crane of 250-ton capacity and is provided with accommodations for some 142 men with all facilities needed to suit the purpose for which it is intended to. The floating "island" is now being towed to Ras Tamura, Persian Gulf Saudi Arabian port, by two Dutch tugs, the "Oceanic" and the "North Sea".
