Background: The Isle of Wight pop festival went into its fifth and final day today (Sunday) with an estimated 400,000 fans jammed into the concert area.
The festival ended on a dismal note. Hundreds of young fans, robbed of all their cash and valuables by a planned criminal manoeuvre during last night, tried to make their way back to the mainland.
Then this evening, as the main acts took to the stage, hundreds of fans battered down fencing to get into the paying arena. They were led by Hell's Angels and French anarchists, and ignored repeated loudspeaker announcements by the organisers that the gates had been thrown open for the final session--featuring Joan Baez and Jimi Hendrix.
The organisers of the festival, Fiery Creations, estimate a total loss in excess of GBP92,000 sterling, mainly through fans entering the arena without paying.
Police, who have arrested 117 young people on drug charges during the festival, expect chaos as the hundreds of thousands of fans try and make their way back to the mainland tomorrow (Monday) via the Island's three main ferry points....already taxed to the full with national holiday passengers.
Escaping the heat and jostle of the concert area, many youngsters bathed nude on nearby beaches. Several holiday-makers forgot their inhibitions and joined in.
A serious accident marred the beach frolics...a French youth fell down a cliff and was badly hurt today in the same spot where another young man was injured in a fall earlier this week.
