Background: The English Soccer Club Chelsea narrowly beat Real Madrid of Spain 2-1 in the replay of the European Cup Winners Cup in Athens yesterday (Friday). But as in the drawn first match on Wednesday, victory was almost snatched from their grasp. Real Madrid, having pulled back one goal in the 75th minute, almost equalised three minutes from time with a wily shot from Amancio. But the first half belonged almost entirely to Chelsea, when they scored both their goals. Chelsea now join Tottenham Hotspurs, West Ham and Manchester City in winning the European Cup Winners Cup for England.
SYNOPSIS: Chelsea kick off from right to left in the dark strip. They're playing Real Madrid in the replay of the European Cup Winners Cup Final in Athens on Friday. They drew on Wednesday. Chelsea went straight into the attack.
The superb shot from half back Dempsey put Chelsea one goal up. Chelsea dominated the first half, and shortly afterwards, their English striker, Peter Osgood, made it 2-0.
Real Madrid then went into the attack. They're the most experienced club side in European football. They won the European Cup six times in succession.
Real continued to attack in the second half. They had a substitute, Gento, the only remaining player of the club's glorious days when they swept Europe before them.
In the dying minutes, Peter Bonetti saved Chelsea from giving away a second goal, and Chelsea won 2-1. Chelsea are European Cup winners champions of Europe.
