TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 1: MUZOREWA: "Now is the time to come home. Bring you guns with you but do come home now. Why do I say come home now? Firstly, I repeat, the Zimbabwe for which you have been fighting will become a reality on December 31st 1978, a truly independent Zimbabwe. Secondly, while your sacrifice was necessary in the past it is now neither necessary or sensible for you to die in the bush when what you have been fighting for is now at hand. Whereas your comrades died for liberation what are you going to die for now should you be killed in the bush. Thirdly, are you not being unjust to yourselves to continue to obey the commands of men who beg you to continue to fight -- to continue to kill and to die? These same men who freely give orders to you are free, safe, and secure. They wine and dine in the luxurious hotels of Lusaka and Maputo and other parts of the world. Are you not condemning our people in the war area to become (indistinct) to death and destruction, caught as they are in the crossfire. Many of your comrades have now taken the road back home, the road to peace. Your place is here. Here we will build the integration of the defence forces of Zimbabwe. There is room for you in our schools and colleges and there will be employment for those who wish to return to civilian life, but, come home now!"

Background: The Rhodesian African Nationalist leader, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, has made a televised appeal to Rhodesian guerrillas to cease their fight and return home in peace. His speech to the nation broke new ground in Rhodesian politics. Previously such addresses have only been made by white Prime Ministers. Bishop Muzorewa, who was ending his first month as an alternating Chairman of the transitional Government's Supreme Executive council, called on the guerrillas not to be misled by their leaders.
