Background: Liverpool -- Hungary shocked world champion Brazil July 15th with a 3-1 win in Group Three play of the World Cup Championships.

Brazil, hampered by the loss of their star, Pele, with a knee injury, and by wet turf, nevertheless played outstanding football during the first half. The Hungarian effort, a complete reversal from the team that lost 3-1 to Portugal in the first round, combined to give the crowd of 51,387 some of the best football seen so far.

Both team played aggressive offensive football, but the Hungarian side repeatedly tore apart the Brazilian defenses to make scoring attempts. Florian Albert led the Hungarian forwards and although he didn't score, had a hand in all three Hungarian tallies.

Hungary scored first when Albert passed to Ferene Bene who did some fancy footwork to get the ball past two confused Brazilian defenders and into the net. This came in the third minute.

Brazil's lone goal came in the 14th minute on a free kick by Tostao and tied the score 1-1. Thus it stood at the end of the first half.

In the 64th minute of play Hungary went ahead again with a fine three pass play that ended with Bene slipping the ball to Janos Farkas who took it at full speed ten yards to and hit it with a tremendous right footer into the low right corner of the net.

Hungary's third score came in the 74th minute on a penalty kick by Kalman Meszoly. Bene was fouled in the area by Altair, after picking u a pass from Albert.

Hungary made one other goal which was disallowed for offside.

It was Brazil's first defeat since Argentina beat them in 1964 and their first World Cup loss since Hungary ousted them 4-2 in the 1954 tournament in Switzerland.

Brazil's defeat throws the group wide open. Portugal, Brazil and Hungary all have two points, but Portugal has played only once and still face Brazil and Bulgaria. Hungary has Bulgaria left. Therefore goal average may be the deciding factor. Two injuries to the Hungarian side in the Brazil match may hurt them against Bulgaria, but they will still be a tough side to beat.
