Background: A private, non profit making organisation run by women in Rio de Janeiro is aiming to provide shoes for the city's barefeet school children.
So far, the organisation, the "Education Foundation", have distributed shoes among more than three hundred children in public schools throughout the poorer areas of the city. But each child has to pay a nominal sum before the shoes are handed over. The organisation says that this is to enable the children to feel a sense of responsibility towards their new acquisition. And in football crazy Brazil, they claim the youngsters' shoes are immune to rough treatment!
