Background: The first aboriginal appointed to the post of a State Governor in Australia has been sworn in at Adelaide, capital of South Australia.

Pastor Sir Douglas Nichollas was nominated as State Governor by the South Australian Premier, Mr. Don Dunstan to replace nuclear scientist Sir Mark Oliphant, who has retired.

The appointment was given Royal Assent and Sir Douglas was sworn in amid pomp, ceremony and cheers from Adelaide crowds.

Sir Douglas, who has lived most of his life in Melbourne, is a distinguished worker for his people within the church. In his younger days he was a top Australian Rules footballer.

Sir Douglas and Lady Nicholls flew to Adelaide in an RAAF VIP jet and were met by Premier Dunstan and State Opposition Leader, Dr. Tonkin.

From the airport the vice-regal couple drove in an open car with police escort to the city where the escort was joined by a troop of mounted police. At Government House, Sir Douglas was sworn in by the Chief Justice of South Australia, Dr. J. J. Bray before 1500 guests, many of whom were aboriginals.

Sir Douglas said later he was aware that in holding the high office of State Governor he had equal duties to every citizen, irrespective of creed, colour, standing or age.
