Background: The traditionally capitalist sport of golf is set to make a comeback in communist China. The first golf course to be built in mainland China since 1949 was officially opened on August 25. Chung Shan Hot Spring Golf Club in Quangdong Province was opened by the Advisor of China's State Physical Culture and Sports Commission, Mr. Rong Gao Tang, and other important officials. Mr. Rong Gao Tang was the recipient of the Olympic Silver Order at the Fifth National Games at the People's Republic of China in Shanghai in 1983. The new 18-hole course has a par of 72 and is of championship standard. It was designed by the internationally renowned golfer, Arnold Palmer. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by a fireworks display, after which Mr. Rong teed off the first ball. The location of the new golf club, Chung Shan, is of great historical significance. It is the birthplace of the founder of modern China, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Many Chinese from overseas, particularly Japan and Hawaii, can trace their ancestral roots back to this region.
