Background: A somber multitude on Sunday (8 July) accompanied the coffin of a Communist student-worker machine-gunned to death by an army patrol, the first fatality of President Juan Bordaberry's military-backed coup.

Ramon Roberto Poroz Borbie, the 28-year-old father of two children, was buried as Uruguayan workers, under threat of dismissal, debated a return to work on Monday after a nationwide strike set off by the June 27 coup. But the strike continued with the new government tightening its grip on the country, although there were signs on Wednesday (11 July) that the protest against the regime was weakening. Troops have been out in strength in the streets in the centre of Montevideo in a bid to prevent more bloody clashes which, so far have injured hundreds and killed at least two. Meanwhile, factories remain empty, banks shuttered and medical men operating only an emergency service.

According to a government communique, Perez Barbie was shot dead as he sabotaged vehicles. The second death was that of a 16-year-old student who was shot by a soldier as he painted anti-government slogans on wells on Sunday night.
