Background: FIRE BROKE OUT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) ON THE GREEK LINER "BRITTANY". THIS MORNING TH VESSEL WAS BURNING END TO END AFTER BEING BEACHED IN THE BAY OF VASSILIKA, NOT FAR FROM ATHENS. THE 16,355-TON VESSEL HAD BEEN IN DRY DOCK FOR REPAIRS FOR A WEEK WHEN THE FIRE BROKE OUT. AFTER FIREMEN ANNOUNCED THE RISK OF AN EXPLOSION, THE "BRITTANY" WAS MOVED, AND FINALLY BEACHED IN A REMOTE SPOT.

MOST OF THE VESSEL'S CREW OF 320 WERE ABOARD WHEN THE FIRE STARTED AND AT FIRST THEY ASSISTED THE FIRE-FIGHTING UNITS. AS THE FLAMES SPREAD AND THREATENED SHIPYARD INSTILLATION SHE WAS MOVED TO AN EMPTY QUAY WHERE 30 FIRE-ENGINES FROM ATHENS AND PIRAEUS HOSED WATER ABOARD FOR SIX HOURS. SALVAGE TUGS THEN TOOK OVER AND TOWED THE BURNING SHIP TO THE DESERTED BAY WHERE SHE WAS RUN AGROUND.

THIS MORNING THE "BRITTANY" WAS STILL ON FIRE, THE FLAMES BEING FED BY 2,000 TONS OF FUEL OIL. BUT, IN SPITE OF THIS, A MINISTRY OF MERCHANT MARINE SPOKESMAN SAID THE POSSIBILITY OF AN EXPLOSION HAD DIMINISHED. IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT TWO SAILORS FEARED MISSING YESTERDAY HAD BEEN ACCOUNTED FOR, WHILE TEN SAILORS, BURNED DURING THE FIRE-FIGHTING ATTEMPTS, WERE RECOVERING. POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE OUTBREAK.

"BRITTANY", ON THE EUROPE-AUSTRALIAN RUN, WAS BEING REPAIRED AFTER BEING FORCED TO TURN BACK FROM A TRIP TO SOUTHAMPTHON TO PICK UP EMIGRANTS TO AUSTRALIA. MORE THAN 400 PASSENGERS, BROUGHT BY AIR TO GREECE, ARE NOW STRANDED IN ATHENS WAITING FOR PASSAGES TO AUSTRALIA.

TH PRESENT OWNERS BOUGHT "BRITTANY" FROM FRANCE IN 1961 FOR GBP3 MILLION. SHE WAS DUE TO SAIL ON A CRUISE TO AMERICA LATER THIS YEAR AFTER SCHEDULED REPAIRS.
