The occasion opened with a memorial assembly at the Israel Air Force Monument near Jerusalem -erected to commemorate the Israeli airmen who lost their lives during the war of 1948. Meanwhile a similar inaugural ceremony was carried out at the Military Cemetery on Mount Heral, Jerusalem. Among the parents who lost their sons in the 1948 Independence War was Speaker of the Israeli Parliament, Josef Sprinzak. He, together with the C-in-C of the Israeli Air Force, Dan Tolkowaky, Military Attaches of various countries - including British Military Attaches, Captain Baratow, Wing Commander Doran and Colonel Cowley - joined in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Air Force Monument.
A guard of honour comprised entirely of woman soldiers paraded outside the residence of President Zvi as the various Ambassadors in Jerusalem arrived to pay their respects. British Ambassador, Sir Francis Bundell, American Ambassador Lawson, were among the first to arrive. Inside the President's house, French Ambassador, M. Gilbert, acted as spokesman for the entire diplomatic corps in expressing congratulations and good wishes for the 10th anniversary celebrations.
