Background: Australia's Evonne Cawley has shown flashes of the brilliant form she'll need to be a serious contender for the Wimbledon Tennis singles title later this month. Mrs. Cawley ended her first week of grass court, preparation for Wimbledon by beating United States champion, Pam Shriver in the Beckenham International in England. In the all United States Men's final, Peter Fleming defeated Roscoe Tanner. We'll see that game in a minute, but first a tennis lesson for sixteen year-old Miss Shriver from Mrs. Cawley.
SYNOPSIS: Shriver serves, and, as she had done earlier in the s et, Cawley broke her service. Cawley leads in the first set, five games to two.
Cawley serves, and once again Shriver nets her return.
Shriver fought back in the second set after losing the first, three-six. But, although she was to win this point with a fine backhand smash, she had no answer to the ground strokes, footwork and anticipation of Cawley.
She made a number of unforced errors which lost her vital points.
Cawley serves for match-point, and it was all over in just sixty-two minutes. Cawley wins six-three, six-two.
Peter Fleming serves in the men's singles' final. Roscoe Tanner returns, and Fleming's backhand is over the baseline.
Both big-hitters from the United States played strong service games, with Tanner taking the first set, six-three.
Fleming serves, and in the second set, reversed the score of the first.
Fleming wins the second set, six-three.
Fleming's booming service won him the third set.
After breaking Tanner's service in the eleventh game, Fleming won the set, seven-five. The final score: Fleming wins three-six, six-three, seven-five. It was Fleming's first-ever singles victory in an English tournament.
